Critical to one’s understanding of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 is appreciation of the significant events in history, as well as the evolution of the American legal system, giving rise to the Act described by Employment Law for Business as “the single most piece of legislation that has helped to shape and define employment law rights in this country.” You are the Assistant Director of Human Resources at Trixvent Corporation, a company that analyzes and edits video games for appropriate language and content. The company employs individuals of various races, nationalities and religions, representative of its international client-base. The Director of Human Resources has received a number of requests from upper-level management specifically to include a session on Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 during an up-coming meeting on discrimination and employer liability. The Director has asked you to prepare a memorandum, approximately four to five pages in length, double spaced, to be distributed to upper-level management during the meeting. Your goal in drafting the memorandum is to familiarize management with some of the significant events in history as well as some of the significant cases in history that led to the passage of the Act. Your memorandum should also provide management with an overview of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, i.e. who does it apply to, what does it cover, what are the theoretical basis for lawsuits and how are claims filed.
