After reading and reflecting on Paulo Freire’s Pedagogy of the Oppressed, write an essay in which you discuss one of his ideas about education, thinking about how it relates to the education system in the US in the twenty-first century. Your essay must have a clear thesis that explains what you think about Freire’s idea. Your discussion should go beyond simply agreeing or disagreeing with Freire. Add on to what he has to say with your own thoughts. For example: Freire suggests that “banking” treats all students like empty vessels, and not like people. If I were writing this essay, I might argue that education is not so black-and-white. I might say that the experiences of “banking” can greatly differ based on students’ ability, English language skills, race, income, or other factors. As you write, include specific evidence in the form of paraphrases or direct quotes of Freire’s work. These quotes should be in quotation marks and properly cited with page numbers (see Purdue OWL for reference). Your essay does not need to focus on “banking,” as Freire has numerous ideas about education. Be sure to clearly explain the idea that you are discussing, including providing direct quotes from Pedagogy of the Oppressed to support what you are saying. You will not need any additional sources. The only voices in this essay will be Freire’s and yours. Your essay must be 4 full pages Times New Roman 12-point font, MLA formatted (ie, about 1300 words)
