read article and watch videos and answer the questions

Part 1:

First, I’d like you to think about the impact of financial stress upon families. Please complete the activities in the following assignment: What Money Means to You & Budgeting and Managing Your Money.

Next, you will learn about the stress caused by family violence through a documentary called Broken Vows. Please share what you feel were the 2 most important lessons or insights you gained from this film in the text box on this page below (20 points). Note: This video also addresses the role that spiritual beliefs can play in supporting or ending domestic violence (in these examples, different Christian denominations and Judaism). As you will see, distortions of religious texts and traditions can contribute to difficulties escaping violent relationships, while other attitudes or interpretations can be helpful in reducing violence. The video, called Broken Vows, is available at this link:

Finally, please read a study of one program that attempts to reduce violence in relationships. The examples in the Broken Vows video you watched were extreme and included gender role stereotypes and a patriarchal imbalance of power. However, less extreme violence is common in marriages and couple relationships around the world, and patterns of violence can escalate over time. In the United States, violence often begins when partners do not know how to manage and resolve conflicts. The study you will read explains an effort to reduce family violence through teaching skills based upon key findings in Gottman’s research.

You will find that research here: Reducing domestic violence (20 points)

Part 2:

This assignment will serve as our last online class and last post before our final for FSW 261. You will have until Saturday night at 11:59 to complete this material.

Please take some time to explore the Sesame Street Divorce Toolkit at this link:

https://www.sesamestreet.org/toolkits/divorce?language=en (Links to an external site.)

The Toolkit is designed for adults to share with children, with the goal of helping children cope better with divorce. Watch each of the videos, take a look at all the printables, check out the songs, and download the app for your phone to explore it (of course, feel free to delete the app when you are finished with this assignment).

In your post, write about what you learned from each of the four parts of the Toolkit. Which video(s) did you find most useful, and why? Which printable(s) did you like best, and why? What did you think the app’s purpose/target is? Would you recommend the app to parents of young kids going through a divorce? Why or why not?

Next, watch a short video about some practical challenges older kids can face in dealing with a divorce:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K9Pv2inG05U&feature=emb_logo

Finally, read the following chapter on divorce (also available on our Files/Readings page):

Divorce Chapter.pdf

Take some notes on the following questions as you read.

Consider the text and Youtube video to answer the following questions:

  1. What is your reaction to learning the most common reasons for divorce? In your opinion, are there good or bad reasons/justifications for divorce?
  2. What did you find most important about how divorce impacts the adults who end their marriage?
  3. Did any research findings surprise you concerning how divorce impacts children? If your first response is “nothing”, take a look again at the chapter, and try asking yourself what might surprise a member of an older generation about what current research tells us about the impact of divorce on children?
  4. What kinds of actions do parents sometimes take that make divorce harder on kids?
  5. How does the information in this chapter compare to your own observations about divorce in the lives of family members or friends? Be specific and cite the information in the chapter you are referring to.
