PHI 104, Fall 2019 The Ideal of Democracy Micro-essay Template 1. Thesis sentence: “I will look at [your case study] and I will draw on [philosopher]’s concept of Y to make sense of this case study.” This should only be a sentence. Really. Just let the reader know what the paper is going to be about. You don’t need to define or explain anything yet. 2. Brief summary of the case study: “The salient features of the case are …” Imagine your reader doesn’t know anything about the case study you have chosen. Clearly and concisely explain the relevant parts of the case. You should not be bringing up new information about the case later in the paper; also, don’t include information about the case that is irrelevant to your argument. If this section is brief, it can be folded into the first paragraph. If you need to include more detail in order to make your argument, then it should be its own paragraph. This description should not be more than one paragraph. 3. Explanation of philosophical concept or argument: “I will argue that [philosopher]’s concept of Y can help make sense of this case. Y is …” Clearly lay out all the parts of this concept. This is a major part of your paper. You need to clearly explain the philosophical concept before you can apply it. Be specific and go into detail. Your job here is to explain the idea to someone unfamiliar with it. Explain how all the parts of this concept fit together. You should not be bringing up new information about the philosophical concept later in the paper; also, don’t include information that is irrelevant to the point you are making in this paper. 4. Application of philosophical concept: “The concept of Y applies to this case in the following way ….” This is where you are presenting your own argument by drawing on the information you’ve laid out in the previous two sections. Explain how the philosophical concept helps make sense of the case study you have chosen. This might seem straightforward to you, but every topic can be reasonably approached from different perspectives. Your task is to clearly lay out how this philosophical concept applies to the case. Go through each step of the concept and explain how it applies to this case study. It’s FINE if this section feels repetitive – that means you’re doing a good job of using the same precise ideas throughout the paper.
